Trinidad del Paraná was built by the native indigenous population. Its chief architects were two priests: Juan Bautista Prímoli, from Milan, Italy and Jose Grimau, from Cataluña in Spain. This mission featured one of the largest and most beautiful churches. In its heyday it was home to 3.000 native indigenous persons. This site is features peak baroque decoration, with stone ornamentation throughout. It holds the crypts of elderly Guarani authorities and Jesuit priests themselves. The grandiosity of the Plaza Mayor is on display, the site of former army parades, religious precessions, as well as theatrical and musical performances. There are symbols throughout the entire ruins. An evening “Lights, Sounds, and Images” tour allows visitors to enjoy a different side of the site as well.

Jesús de Tavarangué, in front of Trinidad, boasts a Moorish architectural style that distinguish it from other Jesuit ruins. After crossing the nave of its old church, we have a breathtaking view of the frieze above the altar, decorated entirely with stone in a sequence of baroque angels. During the excavations in the church, statues with the original colors were found, as well as bones of missionaries buried there. At west of the mission, we can find the ruins of the tower and a big chapel. The tower, square base, was a fort and a bell tower. This temple’s minimalist aesthetics are visible in its arches and portico, unlike other Jesuit ruins. A 3D mapping show is projected from Friday to Sunday, in the evenings.

Both sites were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.
